Files with the .dwf file extension are graphic images created in the Design Web Format (DWF), a secure format originally developed by Autodesk. The idea behind the .dwf format was to allow design data produced in a CAD/CAM environment to be opened, viewed, and printed without the need for the software in which the project was designed. This is accomplished by making the format open, publishing the DWF toolkit specifications, and making freely available the C++ libraries so that developers can include DWF support in their software. Two of the most popular features of the .dwf are the compression ratio which is considerably tighter and smaller than traditional CAD utilities, and the ability to specify the design data that will be included in the file. Designers can include bits and pieces of several projects, or entire designs into a single .dwf file. This allows the designer to include what is needed and hold back what's not.

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

Autodesk offers three software components for users whose CAD software doesn't include .dwf support. First is Autodesk Design Review, a free application used to aid the electronic sharing of designs among all those working on a common project. Participants can view, print, measure and mark up designs without the need for the Writer software or their original CAD environment. Second is the Autodesk DWF Writer package which is technically a printer driver rather than an application. Users whose CAD software doesn't support the .dwf format can print using this driver.

The design data will be converted by the writer with the output data saved as a .dwf file. The third component is an online application called Freewheel. Introduced in 2007, Freewheel is billed as an online "translator" which allows the viewing of any .dwf file without the need to install additional software. CAD programs that currently report having .dwf support include Autodesk AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, Form/Z, IMSI TurboCAD, Microstation, and Revit.
DWF files, version 6 or later, are structured as container files. They are ZIP-compressed and consist of the .dwf header followed by the individual component files. It is possible to rename a .dwf as a .zip and open it using a standard file compression utility. In the uncompressed file a user should see XML and binary files, along with .png previews of each design image. The .png will be of low quality so this is not advisable in a scenario where high quality previews are needed.
Users can expect to encounter the "W3D Parse Error" message when trying to view a .dwf file using an older version of Autodesk DWF Viewer. The fact that DWF Viewer has been repackaged and renamed as Design Review is a good indication the newer files will not be backward compatible. Since Design Review is free software, the easiest solution to parse errors caused by version discrepancies is to download and install the latest version.
Other common errors are related to various CAD programs not exporting to the .dwf format correctly. In these cases the file generally won't be accessible using Autodesk Design Review. An improperly exported file might cause the viewer software to freeze, crash, or just simply fail to load the file. Since this is an archive, no permanent damage should be done to your originals. Creating a new .dwf will generally fix the problem.
Finally, the biggest and most commonly reported error with .dwf files seems to lie with Microsoft Windows and printers. Most modern computers use what are called "winprinters"; so named because they are built with no internal ability to control their own output. They rely completely upon the Microsoft operating system to interpret the data and send the correct commands. In the case of the .dwf file, commands and design elements are often misinterpreted by Windows, thus adversely affecting the printing. It is recommended that businesses relying heavily on printing .dwf files make sure their printers are not "winprinters". An internet search using that phrase should yield all the information one needs on winprinters.
